Ty’s logo project : moodboard
We just wrapped up the next stage of Rainier View’s logo development, the moodboard. Once we’ve gone through the questions we ask to get inside their personality as a church, discuss some of their answers, ask a few more questions we then put this into pictures.
This proves as a good test to see if we’ve translated their answers well and really see them as they are. This isn’t a one time thing, we go back and forth a couple of times to make sure we see it clearly.
This also can uncover a few things. It’s usually a challenge to balance what they want to be, who they really are and who they are becoming. Sometimes we also move past some preconceptions. For example with this logo it was initially discussed that they didn’t want to use any sort of mountain imagery. Everyone used it, they’re not really about a mountain, and quite honestly I typically run away from landscape imagery within a logo. Then they sent us an image of a mountain view overlooking the city, a picture that indeed resonated with them.
This uncovered a strong meaning of the landscape around them and brought back into the mix the mountain as something we could explore. Though I don’t expect us to develop a literal mountain (though you never know) the idea of the overlook will play into the mix now.
Finally the moodboard sets the backdrop to the next stage: sketching. I’ll be asking Ty to put together 10 pages of sketches, rough, ugly, messy, ideas all in pencil….to start.
