Coca~Consistency

Interesting look at the Coke brand through the years. As I’ve been looking at my logo and considering a refresh, this gives me some good food, or I guess drink, for thought.

UPDATE
Very interesting comments on Twitter (which I thought I had a plugin that was supposed to add them here, hmmm) about this image.

Here’s a deeper dig into the logos lifespan.

I still stand by the fact that these timelines shows the longevity of Coca~Cola’s mark. An interesting note is their biggest deviation was during the “New Coke” phase which was a huge flop.

For me I walk away with this, especially as I look at a refresh of the Holy Cow logo: you don’t need something completely new just because you’re bored or because you want to keep it fresh. From mark to mark (with the one exception) the core of the mark remained steadfast. There are certainly exceptions, and plenty of times you need to throw out the old to move into the new…but I think this is a good reminder that that shouldn’t be your first move.

I think you like the logo so much because you are addicted to Diet Coke.

So, tell me why again you would like to re-design your logo?

Well look at you causing trouble my dear. Yes I admit it, I do love my Diet Coke. But that “addiction” beats the snot out of all my old addictions. (aka. back away from my diet coke)

And my dear, I’m not re-designing the logo, I’m exploring a refresh. I may just take my own advice and leave it alone. But since you asked…I’m looking at a refresh because I rushed my own logo process. Timing, as you know, was critical when we launched Holy Cow, I need a logo, I knew my general direction and I just tore off.

Now, I like our logo, but, I think it might lack a bit of personality. Holy Cow! is a big name, just the way people say it (along with my amazing voice mail message) is big and in moving so quickly on the the logo I think I may have missed some of that bigness.

Maybe I’ll be really brave and transparent and bring some of the refresh process (along with some of the complete redesigns I played with) in a later blog post if people seem interested.
