Warning: this is disturbing
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Though many Americans will go to a church that preaches this…MOST don’t feel that’s really the only way to eternal life according to a new survey by the Pew Forum.
57 percent of evangelical church attenders said they believe many religions can lead to eternal life
The whole report is disturbing…another stat shows that anywhere from 10-27% of people (Catholics being some of the lowest) who regularly attend church are not absolutely certain that God exists. These are the people who you see week after week in church, are leading Sunday school, small groups, etc….and they aren’t certain if God exists.
The survey also points out that the church is still failing at reaching the crowd of 18-29 years old as they make up between 14-17% of those attending the church, that number jumps to 36-39% at 30-49.
Now I realize this is just a survey and certainly wouldn’t bet my life on the findings, and I’ve just begun to dig in but this is disturbing stuff…but it’s clear there is still much to do.
So please, take a look at the survey…I’d love to hear your take on it.
Yep. I was reading through this earlier today. It’s particularly disturbing for me because I work in music/media. 2 of the bigger elements that our church uses in our marketing efforts.
Although we are growing, it saddens me to see the lack of depth in discipleship and theological foundations across the board in the U.S. People don’t really know what they believe because no one ever confronts them with absolute truth.
God help us.
Fox News grabbed this story…what was disturbing about their take on this was that they seemed to say this was a good thing as it was showing that people are becoming more tolerant.
There’s a time for tolerance, and there’s a time to take a stand for truth. If the bible is just full of suggestions, then what do we believe in?
We create this make-your-own-church-service atmosphere…quick in, quick out, no feelings hurt, no feathers ruffled and then we wonder why these types of attitudes exist.
Christ is our example, right? He had absolute truth…and he pissed off plenty of people in the doing.
