Seriously? JesusWeen?

From the yes-we-have-lost-touch file, I introduce JesusWeen.

When I saw this at Gawker I figured, okay hoped, certainly they must be mistaken or just poking fun.

Nope.

It’s real.

And it’s stupid.

Listen, I know many/some/all have written Halloween off as evil. And in fact I too believe there are some things about Halloween that are best left alone. But JesusWeen? Really? You know people are laughing at you, right? And don’t be kid yourself that you’re reaching the lost that night, I’d even suggest you might just be making you and your group feel superior and more righteous than everyone else.

If you don’t “believe” in Halloween than skip it, but don’t fool yourself with an “alternative“. You’re just renaming it.

If you do dress your kids up in a fun little costume and go trick-or-treating (aka. community outreach) then be sure to know the code.

I’ve never seen a Christian version of anything that is better that the thing they’re attempting to “appropriate.”

See, what you don’t understand is that it’s the perfect compliment to Jesusmas, ThanksJesus, St Jesus Day, The Fourth of Jesus, and Jesustines Day. It totally works. I don’t know what the big deal is.

It would be great if we understood Halloween in relation to the history of Christianity–like, the fact that it’s All Hallows Eve and such.

It would be great if we understood Halloween in the context of our own Christian history–like how it’s All Hallows Eve and such. We actually have something to celebrate.

I find the bigger issue to be the use of the word “ween”.

It is interesting isn’t it. Halloween has more roots in Christianity than Christmas. Though I do understand the church, and Christians, staying away from the fear, witchcraft, etc.

But dressing my 3 year old up as a lion and having him run around meeting our neighbors with a smile on his face? Hardly demon possessed. (though maybe after the sugar crash)

Yea, perhaps popular Christianity’s apparent disdain for modern culture could be more useful as an appreciation for our own history.

Sidenote: Ick. I hate double posts.

When I first read the ad, I hadn’t even considered that it was Halloween-related, but rather, perhaps a group of people trying to ween themselves from Jesus.

Definitely a fail on many levels. But, and the thing that really drives me mad, is that many will attend and feel better/mightier/holier than everyone else on their block for “skipping Halloween”.

BTW, I’m on a new diet. I’m skipping dinner entirely. I am now only having breakfast, lunch and a post lunch around 6:00pm.

[...] October 31st: JesusWeen.  Seriously. Someone came up with this.  To non-Christians it’s a bit of joke.  To Christians it’s somewhat unnecessary. [...]
