Thought I'd give you all an update.

He is going to college.
He is also going to volunteer.
He is also going to engage within the city he lands in.

The three colleges he's applied at are:

North Central : we know Gordon Anderson, our pastor is from there and on the board, but most importantly we like the urban environment.

Biola : it's a great school, everyone raves about it, it will stretch him, and LA...come on.

Moody : it's free, and as a pastor not having that debt over his head will be huge, we absolutely love Chicago, he his a big heart for inner city, and the fact that it's not an A/G school will stretch him. I also love that he will be able to get plugged into a church like Soul City Church.

So the applications are out, I think he's looking at a nice wide range and if you're still reading would love your prayers that he lands exactly where God wants him.

I'm anti-debt. Kids are graduating college these days with crippling debt. Especially those who go to Bible Colleges.
I'm a big proponent of Master Commissions. There's almost 100 of them spread across the nation and every program is a little different. Be sure and ask what all tuition covers. Some don't include mission trips in that, or room & board.
Full disclosure: I'm part of leadership at a church that has an MC. www.MCWasillaAlaska.com

Oh--and one more thing. I also went through an intense Leadership/Discipleship Training Program called "The Forge" at a Christian Camp (http://www.pinecove.com/leadership-training/). God grew me more here than I'd ever experienced. I HIGHLY recommend it! I went through The Forge after my sophomore year of college (you have to at least complete your freshman year) and it was a great break. I wouldn't be who I am today if it wasn't for The Forge.

My husband and I went to Dallas Baptist University (www.dbu.edu) and we absolutely LOVED it! We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a Bible college.

We were both "Christian Studies" majors with youth ministry as our emphasis. A lot of students who want to be pastors go the "Biblical Studies" route so that they get the Greek and Hebrew training as well. I would think that either would be great for him.

I know that there is an argument for him to not go to a Christian college, but we wouldn't trade what we did for anything. There are SO many places and ways to minister to people and be "in the world" and go to a Bible college at the same time. I believe that solid Biblical training is VERY important for a minister. Yes, life experience is great, but you need to be trained in the Bible as well. But that's just me... : )

DBU has an amazing sense of community. It's really unlike any college I've ever heard of. Also, almost all of the students receive a "Christian Leadership Scholarship" (in varying amounts) and therefore have to spend at least 6 hrs a month volunteering/ministering in some capacity. This really helps with the whole "hands on" thing. My husband and I both helped in a youth group for a couple of our semesters.

I'd love to answer any questions you/he may have.

biola is expensive like someone said before (that is the reason i am not there now), But no atter what school he chooses I personally would say that he needs to go to school and not start out as an intern (something he can do any summer). I truly believe that solid Christian education from a solid Christian community and school is the foundation needed to help him grow in Christ during his time in college and move him toward his goal of being a pastor.

For the past 2 years i have been a student at Biola university and it has been incredible. Though i am at hm now saving money if you are looking for a great Christian school i would definitely recommend Biola. It stand for the bible institute of Las angeles and is a liberal art university. it is the top school in the world for integration of faith and learning. This means that it is distinct bc it teaches students how to be a Christian ad impact the world for Jesus Christ no matter what profession. It is one of two colleges in the nation that is a bible university, where a bible minor is required and all students and faculty are Chiristian, but that also has top professors and programs in every major available.

The professors are incredible. They are friends and mentors. The size is perfect with about 6,000 in attendance. the weather is amazing, and the students are filled with the love of Christ. Your son should definitely look into it if he is considering being a pastor or even just serving God in any kind of work he ends up doing. I will be praying for your son and your family as you move on to the next life stage!

Not to harp on the subject, but the students at Life frequently get over to the Dream Center to work there. :)

So this was a month ago...but I wanted to respond to your question. I graduated from Life Pacific in 2009 and I love this school. It's on the smaller side, which I saw as a plus. The faculty and staff truly care for the students and there are some really exciting things going on there. The student body are very focused on seeing changes in their community, the nation and the world. The guest speakers that come in for the chapels and the faculty are people who have their finger on the pulse of the Christian community and are actually out there practicing what they preach.
If he's interested in doing a YWAM type program they have Ignite, which also earns him college credit. Through that program he can spend a few months in missions work in a non-traditional college setting.
The tuition is lower than at some other colleges and they are accredited, so his degree will transfer elsewhere if he's interested in pursuing further education afterward.
One final thing, you get out of bible college what you put into it. There are people who graduate and think that then they'll become a pastor and impart all of their knowledge on others. It's the people who do internships, participate in missions and non-profit causes that really get the most out of their education. No amount of learning can fully prepare you for ministry. It's getting out there and making the mistakes, creating the connections and seeking out mentors that will help him in the long run.
