Christian products…gone to the dogs

dog tagFirst it was God’s Gym T-shirts, then Testamints and now…’christian’ dog leashes, dog tags and more!

Is there no end to the things we will sell with a cross on it? Folks, it’s tacky and silly…not two words that should be associated with God.

    Serious question from an artistically-impaired reader: While I get that God’s Gym T-shirts and christian dog tags are indeed tacky, how would you genuinely artistically gifted types define the edge between tasteful and tacky? (Come to think of it, I guess this question applies to graphic art in general, not just christian gear.) Seems to me this is a distinction you must make continually when creating, and I’m curious as to how you know when it’s “right” vs. silly though eye-catching.

    I’ve always wondered about this, and it seems that here might be a great place to ask the question!

    It certainly is a subjective matter…and honestly some people just have an eye for it. But I do think there are some standard ‘tests’

    - is it trying to be clever
    - is it copying somebody elses idea
    - can only a small group relate to it
    - are you trying to be cute with something serious
    - would your mom wear it :) (sorry mom)

    Any of those things are great starts to something tacky.

    Alot of this is true, but there are some very useful products in minisrty, too. I purchased a travel bag for adjutants and armour-bearers for church from a company called Attendant Supply, and I just love it.

    Of course, its not a T-shirt or anything, and it doesn’t have crosses or the word Jesus all over it, so it may not count……..
