average rooms

I’d expect 3, maybe 3.5 stars.

But then there are the ducks.

Every day, twice a day there is the “marching of the ducks”. The ducks march in on the red carpet, take a dip in the fountain and then it’s off the elevator for their exit.

And that’s where the 5 stars are born, but it doesn’t stop there..everything in the hotel tells that story and carries the brand. They know what makes them, them. It’s in everything:

The Bathmat

The Employee’s Tie

Everything

So the next time you wonder if your brand is worth the effort…remember the ducks.

I recently had a conversation about email. We were putting together a business card for them and they wanted the email to be info@xyz.com. When I told them we should consider something that says something and didn’t take the generic route I received the response “people know info, it’s not really much of a branding tool.”

Of course it’s a branding tool. Your brand doesn’t have borders, it should touch everything, including your email address. Your brand is all about who you are.

For example, if you want more information about how we can help change the way your church communicates don’t email info@holycowcreative.org email moo@holycowcreative.org do you see how that one minor difference creates some personality? I thought about making it change@ which would have also fit, but I wanted to have some fun with it…so I went with moo.

How about you? If I want to get in touch with your church who do I email? info@yourchurch.com or is it something that introduces me to who you are? If your email address hasn’t met your brand, it’s time to introduce them.

I wrote a reply to a great post at Phil’s blog and realized I needed to share it here as well.

In the city I live we once had a great restaurant downtown that was known for great food and the perfect setting. They were always the most expensive and always full.

Then a new bar opened across the street. In all its brand new glory it attracted a crowd and began to pull some of the business from across the street…they were now full all evening.

In response, the restaurant changed itself and turned itself into a bar. It’s now lucky to have 4 tables full.

They couldn’t get past someone else’s success and figured it meant they were unsuccessful when in fact people most likely had some dinner, maybe a glass of wine and went across the street for some music and dancing.

It is so easy pastors, churches, all of us to look at the what’s been hot for the last 5 minutes and panic. All of a sudden we have to be just like them…we’ve lost the concept of originality.

In the church we copy sermon series, preaching styles, marketing campaigns…you name it, and we wonder why we didn’t have the same blockbuster as the originating church. They’ve lost there personality.

We need to celebrate our uniqueness while celebrating other’s success.

We don’t need another them, we need you to be you.

Great creativity only happens with great input and this city breathes creativity and not just as a candidate for the Olympics or in the theater district and places like Millennium Park but just in the way it carries itself. They are creative not because they decided to be, but simply because they are. This comes out in their architecture, the shopping, advertising, even a free trolley rolling around the city…they have a personality and it shows.

That’s why we start every branding and logo project with a somewhat long questionnaire that doesn’t just ask the normal questions, but digs into the personality and story of the church. Often I will have a church tell me they want to reach families, or college students, or increase diversity…but the bottom line is you will be a church for families not when you decide to be, but simply when you are one.

You see, we can develop a campaign that attracts (fill in the blank) but unless you are ready for them, genuinely understand them and serve their specific needs it will simply become an exercise. It is not enough to set the expectations you must, at the very least, fulfill the expectations and to really be recognized blow their mind.

Do you need to dig deeper? Let’s talk.
