THE CHURCH ARE PEOPLE CALLED OUT OF THE WORLD BY GOD. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD. IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILTY TO HELP OUR SOCEITIES. BUT LET US NOT FORGET THAT THE FACT THAT THE CHURCH IS A SPIRITUAL BODY. CHURCH SERVICES MUST BE USED TO SPIRITUALLY PREPARE THE CONGREGATION FOR THE WEEK. BY THEIRSPIRITUAL MATURITY THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF THEIR NEIGHBOURS AND COMMUNITIES. MAN IS MADE OF THE BODY, A SOUL AND A SPIRIT. CENTRAL TO THIS CORE IS THE SPIRIT WHICH IS THE BREATH OF GOD. FOR THAT MATTER IF THE IMAGE OF GOD IN YOU IS DISTORTED YOU WIL DISTORT EVERYTHING GOD CREATED AND WHAT GOD STAND FOR. LET GET THE PRINCIPLE RIGHT, IN EVERYTHING GOD FIRST AND THE REST WILL FOLLOW. I AM NOT AGAINST THE COMMUNITY SERVICES AND THE NEIGHBOURHOOD SERVICE BUT THE TIME FOR GOD SHOULD BE GIVEN TO GOD. JESUS SAYS GIVE UNTO CEASER WHAT BELONG TO CEASER AND GIVE UNTO GOD THINGS THAT BELONG TO GOD. SUNDAY MORNING IS TIME TO WORSHIP GOD TO REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY AND KEEP IT HOLY. A SERVICE UNTO GOD AND WE WILL USE OTHER DAYS FOR COMMUNITY PROJECTS. BUT IF SUNDAY IS THE ONLY DAY WE COULD ORGANISED OURSELVES FOR COMMUNITY PROJECTS WHY NOT. BUT LETS US GIVE WHAT IS DUE GOD FOR CRATING AND SAVING US THROUGH JESUS CHRIST

@Roland Weekstart...I like that. Hmmm...I might have to use that for a sermon series.

@Jenni Very nice. You're so right and it's refreshing to see churches take charge. It's hard to change, even if for one weekend..but so very good for us, and the kingdom.

The church is the people. This past weekend, our church did exactly what you referrenced in your post. We cancelled all four weekend services and mobilized nearly 2400 people in service projects for local organizations (29 organizations at 51 locations, to be exact). It was an unbelievable experience. There were four serving time slots and each group met in advance at the church for a "send-off". The energy and excitement was incredible. We called the project "Good Neighbor Weekend" and we're using this "event" as a catalyst for creating a new culture at our church (nvcl.org). I'm the Comm Director, and to me it has really started to change the way I think about how to advertise and promote...still chewing on it even tonight.

I would argue that Sunday is only the beginning of a weeklong journey of being the church. I love the picture that that paints. But I think that would be a paradigm shift of biblical proportions for a lot of churches. Plus, we'd all have to stop calling it the "weekend" and start calling it the "weekstart." See the problem?
