A reminder to pastors and artists

“I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow.” 1 Corinthians 3:6

Along with being an armor bearer, I think Apollos’ description is a good example of the role of the artist in the church.

As people walk into the church we set the landscape to prepare the soil. As the pastor plants the seed, we bring creativity and visuals to water that seed.

But may we never forget, that it is God who made it grow. I know it’s a good reminder for me.

Thanks for the reminder. We must take the success or the failures to seriously. We are just a PART of the process.

BTW, really enjoy your wife’s blog. She’s great!

Stupid iPhone. “Musn’t take” too seriously.

So true, it is so easy for the talent that God gives us to cloud the way we see things.

Isn’t she a great writer? So funny…I’m working on turning her into an official mammablogger. :)

such an awesome reminder, michael! that scripture has been on the top of my mind in recent months. i fear it’s a truth that we too often forget. and that leads to a flawed foundation in how we live out God’s calling for our own lives and the Church.

I really like this. It reminds us that it’s not our job to make it grow. We can use the best soil, the most purified water, and all the fertilizer in the world…but it’s GOD that makes it grow.

I wonder though, in some situations, could an artist-pastor be like Paul and plant the seed, and the preacher-pastor be the one that waters it?
Can both mediums be a vehicle for the seed of truth?

Absolutely, sometimes we must let the artist lead…in fact if we only use the same formula over and over no one will really pay attention. The mind wants surprise, it wants to be shaken up.

I think of some of the grafiti by Bansky and Shephard Farley, it moves people with words, it speaks and carries a message just by the striking visuals. What if a church lead with that and watered it with preaching?

It’s also a beautiful reminder that while it doesn’t depend on us, he delights in using us in the whole process.
