Healer Apology (who do you believe in)

I was deeply saddened to hear that the moving story behind the still incredible song “Healer” was a lie. Michael Guglielmucci was conning everyone, including his own family. But as all sin does, it finally caught up with him. He’s not alone, there have been many, many high positioned ministers, etc. that have fallen publicly. There’s even a website that gives a top 10 which also points out it’s not just Christianity.

So why talk about? Why not just brush it under the rug? Because it’s a reminder to all of us to watch where you are headed and who you believe in.

Our faith should only be found in Christ. Allow yourself to be shepherded, but keep your eyes and adoration on God. Too often I believe we set the leaders up for failure, we put them up on pedestals to the point where they can do no wrong and they become untouchable. In the world of church marketing, we need to be cautious not to turn our pastors into untouchable rock stars. Ask yourself “who are we giving glory to?” Our marketing and communications must be authentic, and the only way to do that is by focusing on the power and holiness of God.

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.

When our faith is in God, when we rest upon God for our strength, news like this will sadden us but it will not shake our foundation built on Christ.

    sad

The heart of God is certainly grieved.

by the way, His heart is grieved when you and I lie, cheat, steal, covet, spread rumors, drive too fast… God hates sin. While these high-profile failings really get our attention, we need to examine ourselves and recommit ourselves to be holy, even as God is holy.

The difference is that no one put me up on a pedestal for all to see.

I don’t know that it grieves God any less, but I don’t take people with me. I just see attendance drop at church when the senior pastor isn’t preaching and watch people act as if their pastor walks on water…I just think it’s bad for us and them, it’s sets us up for failure.

You’re right, but, here’s what the writer of Hebrews had to say about who is on a pedestal for all to see:

    Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith;

We all have a great cloud of witnesses — that’s why we all have to be done with sin.

Good stuff Joe. You’re right, we are watched…and a good reminder that others are watching us and testing this thing called “faith”.

It’s the reason I quit smoking…well one of them. I knew it was a bad witness, and I didn’t want a bad habit to be something that could cause someone else to stumble.

    good news about quitting smoking…

A 40-year-old who quits and puts the savings into a 401(k) could save almost $250,000 by age 70.

You’re right, a believer smoking is not quite like a believer walking out of a strip club, but it does make one scratch one’s head.

(btw – love the twitter about guy!)

OK, I’m gonna admit I need help with something I probably shouldn’t but… I find this somehow changes my attitude towards a song I’ve previously been very moved by. Is that wrong somehow? I mean the song is still the song, the lyrics are still true… but the motivation behind their creation was certainly twisted… I dunno.

I know God can use highly imperfect people and things for His purposes (e.g. King David), but I just can’t enjoy the song as I did before knowing what I know now.

I’d love some additional wise comment or insight here.
