My church gave me morning sickness

My wife and I went to the marriage conference, Happily After All, this weekend. Wonderful time, if for no other reason than to spend a couple of days with my wife focusing on what God is doing in our marriage.

HOWEVER. When you are focusing on two segments of married couples, young newly marrieds and married with children…why would you make us be there at 8:00am on a Saturday morning.

Pastors, ministry leaders lend me your ear. Know your audience and cater to them. To have excellence in church marketing it is key in not only in knowing who you are speaking to, but to speak there language. This goes beyond design and copywriting and goes into execution of the programs and ministries.

You mention knowing your audience and catering to them. How do you suggest doing so when your audience is split between the common issue: old vs. new, hymns vs. “praise songs”, cross in the center every marketing tool vs. creative marketing ideas?

I think it’s critical that you address that division. It’s the whole “a house divided can not stand.”

That may mean drawing a line in the sand and saying ‘this is who we are as church body’. It might mean having a primary focus while weaving in some more traditional (or more contemporary) worship elements. This is what my home church does, overall it’s your typical praise and worship but from time to time we bring in a traditional hymn into the mix.

It’s important that you know who you are as a church, as a worshiping body…how else can you communicate who you are until you can answer the question yourself?
