Campus Crusade Drops Christ

Yes, the title is all drama but Campus Crusade for Christ has indeed announced a name change.

I think a name change was a good call. Campus Crusade for Christ, besides being a mouthful, feels outdated and much more focused on the organization and donors than those they are reaching. It is a bit trendy, and for a name change that’s a risk. I think it will survive well though it will at some point feel a bit dated. This likely will be able to be overcome with a logo refresh.

Speaking of logos, with a new name comes a new logo.

Of course with change comes resistance (and moaning and groaning and yes even accusations) and this isn’t an exception as seen in the comments.

What do you think of the change?

[UPDATE: Sounds like from the comments here and on Twitter that many have been referring to the ministry as "Cru" for some time. This is really then a natural progression and a good example of an organization listening to its fans.]

I’d like to hear what their explanation of what “cru” means, I like it. I completely agree that the old name served The Church, and the older members of it as well. I think the new look would look great on a t-shirt.

I think the word crusade is archaic and irrelevant at best- negative and repelling at worst.. so this is an improvement. I like the logo but Cru- pretty much communicates nothing about who/what they are… I suppose that will come with the re-branding….just my thoughts.

Most of my friends involved with Campus Crusade for Christ have called it Cru for a long time, which was actually confusing for me because we didn’t have it on my campus and I always thought they meant crew…as in rowing. Obviously not a problem in print, but in conversation I wonder if this could be more common with the official name change.

    not a good move

On our campus, it has been known as “Cru” for quite a while so I don’t think that the name change will do more than just solidify what students already know.

But do keep in mind because it’s campus ministry people rotate through like no other ministry (other than maybe nursery).

That’s a very good point. It could be confusing in conversation, at least at first.

It was called Cru on our campus half-way through my time there. It is somewhat of a mouthful. I agree that the logo will be outdated in the near future- the logo seems sloppy and not thought out to me. At lease they are trying to change with the times, though! I’ll give them that. :)

    I agree, and it’s not a war/competition right?

I think Cru is okay, they are a group of people spreading the gospel. But certainly are going to have to have more than a name and a new logo to tell their message.

I dig it. Much easier to say and much cleaner and contemporary look.

For those up in arms, your logo/name means nothing if you aren’t living it. And vice versa.

Yeah, it was somewhat surprising at how angry some where with the change. I’d expect resistance (it’s change’s twin brother) but not anger.

Absolutely Aggie, the fact that they took this leap is impressive, and since others already said “cru” it also shows they listen. A rare trait.

I don’t expect they have much of an explanation. Much like The Y, doesn’t.

Check out the comments over at their site, a few people explain it though I don’t know how official it is.

I think that a cross was maybe a bit generic and taking the easy way out with the logo, but having been a part of a lot of Crusade’s ministry in college, I think they are smart to shorten the name with the times.  Makes them feel cooler… which, in itself, is outreach.

Being in campus ministry for almost 10 years I never liked CCC because of the Word crusade…it points to a dark period in human and Christian history. So to drop Christ and Campus and keep Cru as it relates to crusade is interesting. I wonder what is the thinking behind it. Not to be bias, Chi Alpha could stand a reBrand as well as they came up with the name in the 50′s but it wasn’t intended to be scared cow

I like the name Chi Alpha. They could certainly use some branding help, but the name fits.

Many individual Campus Crusade ministries have been using “cru” for some time now, so while it’s a significant change, I don’t find it all that surprising that “cru” won out. It’s worked as a shorthand for CCC for a long time. I wonder how well it will work being the *actual* name. I’m really looking forward to digging into cru’s thoughts on the rebrand.

Our local campus started using “cru” last fall, and frankly I think I
prefer our logo (www.oshcru.com & never mind that I designed
it :) …fewer ironic cross symbols.

I like the new logo, it was time to update. However, anytime a Christian organization removes the name of Jesus Christ it concerns me wondering what else will be compromised for the sake of making who He is and what He did for us more palletable. I’m not saying this is what CCC has done but I have worked for a ministry that started removing God in small things and eventually they announced they were now a humanitarian organization. I pray for the Church in these times that we all stand shoulder to shoulder with integrity and unfailing faith till Jesus returns.

Let me take that a step further (but in a different direction).

I’m concerned when an organization needs to have Christ in the name or a cross in the logo in order for people to recognize what they stand for.

Personally I don’t think Christ came to this earth to be a mascot nor died on a cross for it to be used in a logo.

Of course we absolutely must be careful not to remove the things of Christ and the things of scripture out of the church. There is a hell, sin happens, we need a new song, etc. Don’t be led by our itchy ears.

    Well stated.
